Starter/Generator unit

I have a problem with the starter/generator on the 185 Lo-Boy, ---it turns the motor slow and wont take it over compression enough to start the motor. armature sounds rough and cant see in the end,---sealed plates on both ends.---generator section charges fine,--owner just put in a new battery, and I even tried a different batt. thinking he may have gotten a defective one, but still no go! thanks ; sonny

I think I'd pull it apart and clean up the comutator, and check the brushes.. loose or short brushes.. or weak springs are fine for picking up enough power to charge a lil.. but much different than starting.

if the brushes and commie loks good and there is no proud mica hldingthe brushes up.. migh be time for a rebuilder to look at it and throw it n a growler.. might have bad segments ont he commie.. lastly.. if the bushings // bearings are worn, it can allow the armature to torque sideways and bind.. this causes hard starts.. though doesn't effect charging much.. though usually makes it noisy..

The bearings feel tight,---but it does sound like the mica is holding the brushes up,----so I think it needs to go to town to Dr. Bill!!!----He usually treats me fair when I take stuff to him!! thanks; sonny

proud mica is easilly undercut with a broke hacksaw blade.. don't take but a couple thousandths of undercut to do it.
