I have a problem with the starter/generator on the 185 Lo-Boy, ---it turns the motor slow and wont take it over compression enough to start the motor. armature sounds rough and cant see in the end,---sealed plates on both ends.---generator section charges fine,--owner just put in a new battery, and I even tried a different batt. thinking he may have gotten a defective one, but still no go! thanks ; sonny

I think I'd pull it apart and clean up the comutator, and check the brushes.. loose or short brushes.. or weak springs are fine for picking up enough power to charge a lil.. but much different than starting.
if the brushes and commie loks good and there is no proud mica hldingthe brushes up.. migh be time for a rebuilder to look at it and throw it n a growler.. might have bad segments ont he commie.. lastly.. if the bushings // bearings are worn, it can allow the armature to torque sideways and bind.. this causes hard starts.. though doesn't effect charging much.. though usually makes it noisy.. soundguy |

The bearings feel tight,---but it does sound like the mica is holding the brushes up,----so I think it needs to go to town to Dr. Bill!!!----He usually treats me fair when I take stuff to him!! thanks; sonny

proud mica is easilly undercut with a broke hacksaw blade.. don't take but a couple thousandths of undercut to do it.
